Clues in the Classroom

The art and music room door was shut, but it wasn’t locked. Abby sat at a table, the sleeves of her purple sweater pushed back to her elbows. She was painting a big cardboard Christmas tree.

“Hey guys!” Her face was almost as red as her hair.

“It’s colder than a penguin’s bottom in here!” Caleb said.

Abby shrugged.

“Maybe the heater’s broken,” she said.

I looked around. “You’re all by yourself?”

“Yep. I’ve been painting all afternoon. Joy and Dalia left a while ago. Mrs. Center went to an appointment. She said she’d be back to lock up the classroom around five.”

Then I saw the backdrop. It was beautiful, with snowcapped mountains, glittering pine trees and a blue sky. “Wow! Did you finish it?”
